in a market with a limited selection of cars available, which was the situation I was in. I was looking for a TT w/ about 20K miles and not black or red--a pretty tall order.I just made it a habit to check every email site--ebay, auto trader, cars direct.com, cars.com, abracat.com--and the classifeds of some major newspapers that didn't link to those internet sites, EVERY DAY. And I decided I was willing to go nationwide. Autotrader and ebay generated the most leads but you never know where 'the car' will pop up, so IMO you've got to cast your net as widely as possible. Counting cars I excluded for color, at least one TT with 20K or less would pop up a month (that was 4 years ago, however). By sitting on my bum for a week (price a bit too high) I lost out on TT with 13K miles. But after 6 months I found the car I now own (21K; $18750 stock except for catback, POP intake, stereo; traveled to Houston from Washington State). Don't ignore ebay. I wouldn't recommend buying a car before a thorough mechanical and in-person inspection, but valuable cars rarely sell on ebay because reserve prices are too high. This creates an opportunity for you begin negotiations and set terms of the deal well before the auction closes. But buying long distance can be tricky. If you'd like some tips on cross country deals, email me. Good luck.
